Add a little spice to your life this spring and summer! The weather is warm and it’s time to fire up your custom, built-in barbeque from System Pavers. And what’s better than picking fresh herbs from your very own garden to add a little more flavor to your signature recipe??

Green thumb or not, with a little care and a touch of patience, you can grow your own herb garden. And if you have SP Turf, you have more time to put into a garden since you aren’t worried about maintaining a traditional sod lawn. So give it a try! We thought we would help you get started… So check out some of our favorites below:

BASIL Often used in Mediterranean cooking; mid-May is a great to grow this popular herb. You can plant it by seed, or even transfer an already grown potted plant (which you can find in your local grocery store). If you choose to plant it by seed, germination will occur in about 7 to 10 days. It needs sunlight for a good portion of the day as it thrives in warmer temperatures (perfect for all our west coast fans).

CHIVES Related to the onion, this is a perennial; they are great for adding to soups, salads or even a baked potato. If you grow these by seed, they will begin to develop in approximately 10 to 20 days. A hardy plant, it can flourish in many climates, but they certainly do well in the sun.

MINT Easy to grow; this herb is a wonderful addition to jellies, tea, lemonade and other fruity summer drinks! Another hardy perennial, is develops in about 10 to 15 days. They flourish in rich soil, but be sure to keep them out of the hot afternoon sun. There are a variety of types, but peppermint and spearmint are the most popular.

SAGE Another popular Mediterranean herb, sage adds flavor to dressings and rubs for chicken, turkey, and sausage dishes. It grows well in May, with 20 to 30 days to germination. It grows to 2 feet and is great fresh or dried.
